The Zero Tolerance Initiative (ZTI) is a global coalition founded in 2019 by rightsholders in response to the alarming rise in violence against human rights defenders in international supply chains. Protesting against environmental impacts often leads to violence, intimidation, criminalization, and even killings, particularly across sectors like extractives, logging, infrastructure, energy, agroindustry, and illegal economies. The ZTI emphasizes a collective commitment to implement zero-tolerance policies against attacks on individuals fighting for their rights, particularly regarding land and environmental issues.
The three strategic areas of the ZTI are: (1) Improving public policies and corporate practices, (2) Building global solidarity, and (3) Strengthening collective protection of Indigenous peoples and communities at risk.
The initiative brings together grassroots defenders, indigenous peoples, and international NGOs to create standards and frameworks that safeguard these communities. It also provides a resource hub offering tools and guidance for holding businesses accountable and ensuring they respect the rights of human rights defenders. With over 100 members across 44 countries, mainly in the Global South, the ZTI continues to expand its influence and support for vulnerable communities.
