Promote, Protect and Respect Environmental Rights

The Environmental Rights Initiative (ERI) by UN Environment focuses on promoting, protecting, and respecting environmental rights globally. It builds on the outcomes of past projects and aims to empower frontline environmental defenders, support legal frameworks, and facilitate access to information and resources on environmental rights. The ERI collaborates with various partners, including governments, businesses, media, and civil society, to enhance awareness and implementation of these rights and ensure that environmental protection aligns with human rights.

Through this initiative, UN Environment seeks to:

  1. Strengthen awareness of environmental rights.
  2. Promote the fulfillment of environmental rights and build partnerships to support this goal.
  3. Contribute to the broader goals of the UN system.
  4. Provide legal and policy guidance to help actors implement environmental rights obligations.
  5. Develop materials and training to raise awareness of emerging environmental rights issues.
  6. Offer an online resource portal with legal information and tools related to environmental rights.
