One Ocean Hub

Fair and inclusive decision-making for a healthy ocean
One Ocean Hub website
The One Ocean Hub works to transform global ocean governance and research by promoting more integrated and inclusive approaches.

The One Ocean Hub is a global program that aims to promote integrated, inclusive, fair, and sustainable ocean governance. It brings together researchers, policymakers, international organizations, civil society, and local coastal communities to inform decisions based on diverse values and knowledge systems. By focusing on human rights and environmental law, the Hub ensures that marginalized voices are part of decision-making processes at all levels.

Although it focuses its work on South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands, the Hub has multiple partner organizations and researchers across the world. It also engages in international research exploring ocean law and policy.

The One Ocean Hub’s research concentrates on:

  1. Blue Economy and Society: Researching blue economies and their connection to global sustainability and human rights.
  2. Capacity Strengthening: Supporting actors in fulfilling their roles in ocean protection.
  3. Marine Spatial Planning: Improving ocean governance by ensuring the inclusion of stakeholders in Marine Spatial Planning.
  4. Environmental and Human Rights Law: Understanding how basic human rights are affected by the ocean and marine ecosystem services, so that those considerations can be included in decision-making.
  5. Ocean Culture: Promoting art as a tool to amplify marginalized voices in global ocean debates.

Learn more about the Hub’s work, events, impact stories, and publications on its website, or listen to its podcast.
