The Natalia Project is the world’s first security alarm system designed for human rights defenders at risk. Named in honor of Natalia Estemirova, a human rights advocate in the North Caucasus, the project aims to safeguard defenders globally.

Since its launch in 2013, the Natalia Project has supported more than 200 human rights defenders worldwide. Participants receive alarm devices and undergo training to develop comprehensive security plans. In the event of an attack, they activate the alarm, which triggers a distress signal with GPS location to designated contacts and Civil Rights Defenders’ headquarters in Stockholm while simultaneously broadcasting the alert via global social media platforms. “For me, my Natalia has been a game changer. It helped me feel safe. Just having this tiny device with me, knowing that there was someone on the other side of the world just waiting for my call, being ready to act if something happens gave me such a confidence. That changed everything.”
Génesis Dávila, founder of Defiende Venezuela and participant in the Natalia Project.
