The Data Working Group consists of national and global data collectors who document both lethal and non-lethal attacks against Indigenous, Land, and Environmental Defenders (ILEDs). Motivated by governments’ inadequate tracking of such incidents, this group aims to strengthen protection protocols, enhance pressure on governments to safeguard defenders, and encourage businesses to establish safety measures for environmental defenders and communities.

The collected data undergoes rigorous verification through:
- Cross-referencing of public sources
- Consultation with human sources (e.g., eyewitnesses or local organizations)
- Review of official documents
All collected information reveals the widespread yet underreported non-lethal attacks and exposes patterns of violence that often precede the killing of environmental defenders.
