The United Nations welcomed the recognition by the General Assembly (GA) that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a human right. This Information Note aims to enhance understanding of this ‘right to a healthy environment’, emphasizing its importance. It outlines the origins, key elements, and benefits of recognizing this right, and highlights the roles of various stakeholders in its promotion, which is crucial for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The co-authors of this guide (OHCHR, UNEP, UNDP) hope that it will drive the necessary momentum and action to protect and restore our environment. They are committed to working with governments, international organizations, rights-holders, businesses, and other stakeholders to make this right a reality for all.
“The promotion of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment requires the full implementation of the multilateral environmental agreements under the principles of international environmental law.”
