The Environmental Defenders Collaborative (EDC), launched in 2017, provides funding to activists, groups, and networks defending their lands, livelihoods, and cultures. Its primary aim is to support frontline communities facing intimidation, criminalization, and attacks while backing strategic interventions that safeguard environmental defenders’ lives, rights, and work.
EDC’s grantmaking approach is timely, holistic, flexible, and participatory, organized around four principal strategies: Protect, Prevent, Reveal, and Redress. In the past year alone, the EDC has made 217 grants across more than 40 countries, including Argentina, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, and Palestine.

The Collaborative’s ultimate goal is to create a safer, more just world where environmental, land, and indigenous defenders can continue their work without facing threats to their safety and well-being. By combining the efforts of philanthropic groups and local communities, EDC fosters lasting, sustainable impacts across a global landscape of environmental defense.
