The African Environmental Defenders is an emergency fund launched in 2019 to support communities impacted by the increasing demand for land and resources. It directly supports environmental and land defenders, conducts comprehensive research on environmental and human rights laws, and engages in key national and international processes.
“Global Witness, through a report released in 2020, established that 212 land and environmental defenders were killed in 2019 while fighting to secure their lands and territories of life.“
Supported by the International Land Coalition, the ICCA Consortium, and the African Activists for Climate Justice coalition partners, the fund addresses the growing crisis of violence against environmental defenders, particularly indigenous peoples and women. The initiative underscores the urgent need for support and protection for those committed to safeguarding their lands and ecosystems.
